The Civics and Culture Area held its first intersection Grade 7 Debate Finals last Friday, February 10, 2012 at the Multi-Purpose Hall 1. The competing debate teams were Grade 7 Freedom and Courage. The two teams outwitted each other and showcased their debating skills on the topic “Playing computer games leads to violent behavior.” Grade 7-Freedom, representing the affirmative side won with its team member, Isabella Ramirez named as the best speaker. The debate adjudicators included Dr. Queena Lee-Chua, Mrs. Paula Reyes and Ms. Jaimee Bruce. The parliamentary debate was introduced this school year and incorporated into the Civics curriculum to develop the students’ persuasion, argumentation and speaking skills. Moreover, this learning tool allows the students to express their views on contemporary issues, widen their perspectives on complex problems, increase their awareness on social, political, ethical and historical issues and enhance their research skills. More importantly, debate allows the students to take an active role in education and promote advocacy
